Tractor-Mounted Mechanical Weed Control for Row Crops
The Wild Imports Rotary Star Wheel Inter-Row Weeder is a simple, highly effective tractor-mounted implement designed for mechanical weed control and shallow soil cultivation between established crop rows.
Available in 2-row and 3-row configurations, the machine features independently spring-loaded rotary star-wheel assemblies that follow the ground while disturbing the upper soil layer, uprooting young weeds and breaking surface crust around crop rows.
Each working section incorporates paired curved star wheels together with a cultivation tine/share. The rotating wheels are ground-driven as the tractor moves forward, meaning the implement requires no PTO-powered rotor. Adjustable mounting positions allow the machine to be configured for crop rows spaced approximately 500–800 mm apart.
This type of mechanical inter-row cultivation is commonly used for crops including maize/corn, soybeans, peanuts, beans and suitable vegetable crops, particularly where growers want to reduce reliance on chemical weed control. Comparable commercial machines use floating or spring-loaded working sections so the cultivating tools can follow variations in the ground surface.
How It Works
As the tractor travels along the crop rows, the ground-engaging star wheels rotate automatically. Their curved steel fingers penetrate the shallow surface layer, disturbing weeds and breaking cultivated soil while the spring-loaded mounting allows the assembly to move with changing ground contours.
The working angle, position and row spacing can be adjusted to suit the crop and field conditions. Similar rotary weeding assemblies are specifically designed for seedling-stage weed control, soil breaking, shallow cultivation and inter-row operations.
The small cultivation shares positioned behind the rotary assemblies further loosen the soil and assist with controlling weeds between the crop rows.
